Your New Boxer Puppy: The First Month at Home
The first few weeks with a Boxer puppy quietly shape the rest of their life. Here's a realistic, week-by-week walkthrough of feeding, sleep, vet visits, and getting your bond started on the right note.
Before Pick-Up Day
Treat puppy-proofing the way you'd treat baby-proofing. Boxers are nosy, mouthy, and athletic from day one. Stock up on the basics:
- A correctly sized crate — just enough room to stand, turn, and stretch out.
- Stainless steel food and water bowls.
- The same puppy food the breeder is using, so you can transition over 7–10 days.
- A 6-foot leash, flat collar, and ID tag.
- Enzymatic cleaner for the accidents that absolutely will happen.
- Safe chew options (Kongs, Nylabones — skip rawhide).
Week 1: Decompress and Settle
Your puppy just lost their littermates and the only home they've known. Crying, accidents, and patchy sleep are all normal. Your only real job this week is to be calm, predictable, and steady.
- Meals: 4 small meals at the same times each day.
- Potty trips: every 1–2 hours, plus right after eating, drinking, playing, or napping.
- Sleep: 18–20 hours total — don't over-stimulate them.
- Vet visit: book a wellness check inside the first 72 hours (most health guarantees require it).
Week 2: Building Confidence
Begin very short, upbeat exposure outings — carry your puppy to a quiet friend's yard, a sleepy street, or a pet store cart. Stay away from dog parks and anywhere unvaccinated dogs may have been until your vet gives the all-clear.
Week 3: Training Foundations
Introduce name recognition, sit, and a simple crate routine using high-value treats. Keep each session to 2–3 minutes and quit while you're winning. Boxers are clever but bore fast — short and fun beats long and frustrating every time.
Week 4: Hitting a Rhythm
By now your puppy should know the routine, respond to their name, and sleep through most of the night. Keep working on socialization, schedule the next round of vaccines, and start looking into a puppy class for ongoing training and exposure to other dogs.
The Most Common First-Month Mistakes
- Switching food too quickly — almost guarantees diarrhea. Transition over 7–10 days.
- Too much exercise — Boxer growth plates close around 18 months. No long runs or repetitive jumping.
- Skipping the crate — it's the puppy's safe space and a sanity-saver for you.
- Inconsistent rules — if "no couch" is the rule, it has to be the rule for everyone, every time.
